There are a total of 312 schools in the entire District with an enrollment of 35,381 of whom 15,865 are boys and 23,388 are girls. There are 35 privately- owned schools, 12 of them pre-school, 13 primary schools, 9 junior secondary schools (equivalent to middle schools in the U.S.), and 1 senior secondary school (equivalent to high school in the U.S.)
The state of the school system in the District is also in a "challenged" state. Most teachers in Ghana recieve the equivalent of $5 to $7 U.S. dollars a week as their salary. The schools require students to be equipped with uniforms, books, paper, and writing utensils, yet does not provide them free of charge. The burden is placed on the families of the students. Most of them cannot afford these costs, so they don't bother sending their children to get an education, and end up putting them to work.
Schools often lack basic sanitary and environmental infrastructure to ensure a safe, clean, and positive learning environment.
![]() The poor state of school infrastructure, furniture, teaching aids, textbooks and library books as well as the disturbing malaise in school management, teacher motivation and unsatisfactory pupil performance, particularly in reading skills, have all led to a state of emergency in Ghana's education system. Unhappiness and concern by all stakeholders have led the State to try new educational programs under partnership with NGOs.
