The Asebu Free Community Library will be established in an unused meeting room of the local Asebu Town Council Building. This building is centrally located in the town, and houses the offices of local town authorities. This location was selected by AYD staff as an ideal location, as the facility holds town hall meetings, and is an epicenter of the civic establishment of Asebu.
The Council building as a location also makes economic sense, as the space for the library will be free of charge to AYD, thanks to town officials. They have expressed eargerness to help AYD improve the literacy of Asebu residents, and are looking forward to the inauguration.
The goal of the library is to offer basic reading comprehension materials to the residents of the town and the region, in order to help them learn to read. Once AYD has established a regular clientele of "student readers", the library will then offer them a lifetime of reading and educational materials for any level of comprehension.
The main focus of the books and the materials that have secured through donations, have been educational. The library will offer everything from basic reading skills and comprehension for beginner readers to advanced college and university level materials. There are also numerous reference books, self-help books, health and medicinal books, spiritual books, and even books for those wishing to enter the medical and law fields.
The library will also have an extensive collection of locally published books, for educating schoolchildren in Ghana.
Electricity is available to the building, and so the library will have a computer (one donated so far.. hopefully more to come) and a tape player for the books on cassette.
The Asebu Council building is old and in need of some amenities, thus the room in which the library will be lcated will need some retro-fitting. The windows will need new locking shutters complete with locks and hinges. The library room willl also need a new door with a lock and hinges. AYD would like to give a special thanks to The Asebu Town Council and The Chief of Asebu District for their generosity.
